When the doorbell rings
Subject: When the doorbell rings
Preview text: Plus the three-step doorbell routine from this week's episode, and December group class dates.
Hi friend,
Holiday guests are coming, and on this week's episode Jo talked about the moment a lot of you have asked about: the doorbell.
Jo's main point: most dogs aren't being "bad" at the door. The doorbell is the most exciting sound in the house, and nobody has shown them what to do instead.
The three-step routine Jo walks through on the episode:
1. Practice with a recorded doorbell when no one is actually coming.
2. Ask for the same spot every time, like a mat a few steps from the door.
3. Open the door only once your dog is on the spot, even if that takes a few tries.
Jo's reminder: start this a couple of weeks before guests arrive, not the night of the party.

Your dog isn't bad at the door, the doorbell is just exciting
In Ep. 41, Jo explains why the door is the hardest place in the house for most dogs, and why it gets harder during the holidays when the bell rings more.
The episode ends with a simple three-step routine to practice before guests arrive. It's short on purpose, so the whole family can use the same steps.
Four ways to keep the conversation going.
