The source recording

The consultant's own 24-minute podcast episode, "Ep. 33: The first 30 days: a new-hire check-in plan for busy owners." Nothing else from the consultant. Every tip below comes from the consultant's episode; we don't add legal, tax, payroll or HR advice of our own.

Most first months don't go sideways because an owner doesn't care. They go sideways because the check-ins were planned for a calm week.

The first 30 days, made simpler

Subject: The first 30 days, made simpler

Preview text: Plus the three check-in questions from this week's episode, and our new Friday office hours.

Hi there,

This week's episode was about a stretch a lot of small-business owners tell us goes by in a blur: a new hire's first month.

Renee's main point: most first months don't go sideways because an owner doesn't care. They go sideways because the check-ins were planned for a calm week, and then the calm week never came.

The three questions Renee suggests asking at the end of weeks one, two and four:

1. What's one thing that's been clearer than you expected, and one that's been less clear?

2. Who have you gone to with questions so far, and did you get what you needed?

3. What would make next week easier?

Renee's reminder: this is a conversation starter, not a policy. For anything specific to your state, your industry or a particular situation, check with your own HR advisor or employment attorney.

New this month. We've opened Friday morning office hours for owners with quick people questions. Reply to this email and we'll send the booking link.

Why new-hire check-ins slip (and a simpler plan for the first 30 days)

In Ep. 33, Renee talks about the gap between the onboarding plan an owner sketches before day one and the busy weeks that actually follow.

The episode ends with three short questions for check-ins at the end of weeks one, two and four. They take about fifteen minutes each, and they work whether a business is hiring its second person or its twentieth.

Four ways to keep the conversation going.

04 / GRAPHICS (GROWTH + GRAPHICS)

The same week, as branded graphics.

On the Growth + Graphics, the same episode also becomes 3-5 graphics a week in your colors: quote cards, a carousel and a blog header.

  • An episode card with the title and the consultant's own photo
  • A "three check-in questions" carousel, one question per slide
  • An office-hours card using only the times the practice confirms
